The 3 E’s

Depending on what stage you find yourself in, you may need different kinds of research to inform your next steps. Here are some of the broad strokes ways we can worth together.

Experiential.png

Experiential

Sometimes called discovery or foundational research, experiential studies are all about understanding peoples’ current lived experiences. They define who we’re actually creating for (and what these folks really value) so we can identify new opportunities for them. It’s the perfect kind of project to set the stage for a new product or service, or to understand how an existing product is being used in the wild, as well as where untapped opportunities might lie.

Example Methods
User interviews, ethnography, surveys, and more
Example Deliverables
Insight statements, journey maps, personas, and more

Exploratory

Sometimes called generative or co-creation, this type of research is all about creating concepts together with stakeholders and customers. Its purpose is to bring numerous concepts into the world that cover our blind spots, since we’re involving both customers and stakeholders for a 360° view. It’s the perfect kind of project for those who may understand the problem quite well, but haven’t nailed down the right solution quite yet. It’s also perfect for when you need a cat herder to draw out the inner lions (a metaphor for fierce ideas) in your teams.

Example Methods
Co-creation or co-design sessions, focus groups, and more
Example Deliverables
Product/service concepts, design prototypes, journey map, and more

Evaluative

This type of research is all about ensuring the experiences you’re creating are living up to their vision. It involves a process of validating concepts, flows, or engineered products to iteratively arrive at the best user experience. This kind of project is perfect for nascent products or services that need that extra validation before a big investment push, or for seasoned products or services that want to stay at the top of the food chain. It’s the best way to stay ahead of the curve.

Example Methods
Usability/content testing, concept testing, closed card sort, and more
Example Deliverables
Study insights, usability/content reports, MVP recommendations, and more
